Something's out there...

The night is black, the wind it moans.
I sit and listen to its groans,
Thankful for my home secure,
When comes a yowling at my door.

I go and out the window peer,
To see what comes a-calling here.
But all I see is inky black,
Dark as black cats in a stack.

As I stand staring at the door,
I think of things I've thought before.
Should I go out, see what draws near?
I can't decide, I just stand there.

Again the yowling do I hear,
And I decide despite the fear,
To open door and go and see,
What it is that yowls at me.

I turn the knob to take a peek.
The door it opens with a creak.
And something dark and black as ink,
Slides inside 'fore I can blink.

A black-furred creature, fanged and clawed,
Across the room, sinuous, pawed.
Surveying all that it could see,
It turned and headed straight t'wards me!

It opened up its gaping maw,
I scarce could credit what I saw!
The sight must give its prey great fear,
for its jaw opened ear to ear!

I would this dark monster tame,
But this beast answers to no name.
And still it came e're closer still.
I felt a chilly sort of thrill.

But I did 'scape the beast this day,
And on my knee its head it lay.
It's rumbling purr warmly I felt,
Through its dark and silky pelt.

And what is it? you may say,
What monster hunting human prey?
How did I tame the fearsome beast,
That must be ten feet tall at least?

My gullible friend, it's not like that.
This monster's only my black cat.
